세계에 알리고 싶어요”
‘도깨비(dokaebee)’ 화가 권태순 교수

인형같이 초롱초롱한 눈을 하고 바라보는 모습에 같이 넋 놓고 쳐다보게 된다. 빨갛고 도톰한 입술이 강렬한 이 생물체는 머리 위의 빨간 꽃 때문에라도 여성적으로 느껴지지만, 곧 우람한 체격에 용의 비늘이 달린 몸, 로켓 모양의 발을 볼 때엔 남성적이다. 강렬한 원색과 기괴한 모습으로 눈길을 잡아끄는 이 팝아트의 제목은 ‘슈퍼스타 도깨비 타이건(Superstar Dokaebee Tigon)’이다.
한국 전통 도깨비를 재해석한 독창적인 도깨비 캐릭터의 텍스타일 디자인 작품으로 주목받아온 신한대학교 섬유소재공학과 권태순 교수는 올해 적극적으로 세계 유명 아트페어에 작품을 출품해 세계 속에 한국의 전통과 미를 알리고자 하는 포부로 가득 차 있다.
I can’t help but looking at those sparkling eyes vacantly. This creature of red and plumped lip seems to be feminine with red flower on its head but it is also masculine with brawny figure, scales on its body and feet look like a rocket. The name of this eye-catching creature with vivid colors and weird shape is called ‘Superstar Dokaebee Tigon’.
Tae-soon, Kwon who is a professor of Department of textile materials engineering at Shinhan University has been attracting people’s attention for her textile design work with unique Dokaebee character which is a reproduction of Korean traditional Dokaebee. And she spires to promote Korean tradition and beauty in the world by actively participating in world famous art fairs this year.
지난 15년간 수많은 그룹전과 개인전 등 활발한 활동을 벌여왔던 권 교수는 올해 10여개의 아트페어에 참가할 예정이다. 이미 프랑크푸르트 아트페어와 팜비치 아트페어, 칼스루에 아트페어에 작품을 출품했고,뉴욕 엑스포와 홍콩 아트페어, 스위스 바젤 스콥, 마이애미 아트페어 스콥 등이 예정돼 있다. 대학교수로서 후학을 양성하는 일에도 바쁜 그이지만 짬짬이 틈을내어 작품 활동에 몰두하며 하루 24시간이 부족할 정도로 눈코 뜰 새 없는 하루하루를 보내고 있다.
권태순 교수는 특이한 이력을 지닌 작가다. 패션디자인으로 시각예술활동을 시작한 그는 메이크업 아트를 거쳐 다양한 매체를 통한 시각디자인 경험을 쌓아왔다. 지금은 아트마스크와 텍스타일 아트, 컴퓨터를 이용한 이미지 창출로 그만의 독특한 예술세계를 구축하고 있다.
최근 그가 새롭게 선보이는 것은 ‘도깨비’ 시리즈다. 우리 역사 속의 벽화와 기와·벽돌 무늬 등에 등장하는 도깨비의 모습을 가져와 현대적으로 재해석해 변화시킨 그의 작품은 독특하면서도 아름다워 눈길을 사로 잡는다. 특히 도깨비를 처음 접하는 세계인의 눈에 이 모던하면서도 발랄한 도깨비의 모습은 신선하면서도 매력적으로 다가간다.
“붉은 스트라이프 무늬의 바탕은 ‘태양’을 나타내고 이는 ‘절대자’를 의미해요. 도깨비인 ‘슈퍼스타 디 타이건(D.Tigon)’의 머리 위에 있는 꽃은 ‘사랑의 완성’이죠. 도깨비는 호랑이의 갈퀴와 용의 비늘을 갖고 있는데, 초록색 갈퀴로 표현한 것은 무언가를 이루는 것을 뜻해요. 입술은 ‘출납’ 즉, 돈과 버는 힘을 표현하고 있고, 얼굴과 발의 ‘로켓’은 ‘미래’를 의미합니다. 슈퍼스타 D.Tigon의 전체적 모습은 미래에 대한 밝은 희망과 꿈을 나타내는 거예요.”
She has been actively holding private exhibitions as well as group exhibitions for the last 15 years and she is planning to participate in around 10 art fairs this year. She has already submitted her works to Frankfurt art fair, Palm Beach art fair and Karlsruhe art fair and New York expo, Hong Kong art fair, Swiss Scope Basel art fair and Miami art fair scope to be followed. She is tied up with fostering future artists
but sparing her time to produce works so there are just not enough hours in a day for her.
Professor Tae-soon, Kwon has a special background. She initiated her visual art works in fashion design and she has a wide range of visual design experience with various media including make-up art. Now she is establishing her own art field by art mask, textile art and creating images using computer.
Her recent work is a series of ‘Dokaebee’. She reproduced and transformed traditional Dokaebee which is appeared in the traditional patterns of wall painting, roof tile or brick and her works attract people’s attention for their beauty and uniqueness. Especially for those who have never seen Dokaebee, her bubbly Dokaebees seem to be very new and attractive.
“The background with red strip pattern refers to ‘sun’ which means ‘absolute power’. The flower above Dokaebee named ‘Superstar D. Tigon’ refers to ‘completion of love’. Dokaebee has a mane of lion and scales of dragon.
The green mane refers to achieve something, the lip refers to withdraw and deposit, in other words, the power to earn money and the rocket in its face and feet refers to ‘future’. In overall, Supestar D. Tigon represents bright hopes and dreams about future.”
도깨비는 양성(兩性)을 갖고 있다. 남성이면서도 여성이며, 용맹스럽기도 하고 겁도 많은 존재다. 무서우면서도 친근하고, 신비한 능력을 가지고 있지만 우매함을 보여주기도 하는 등 상극의 이미지를 갖고 있다. 무엇보다 가장 한국적이고 그렇기에 가장 세계적일 수 있는 것이 도깨비가 가진 매력이라 할 수 있다.
권 교수가 새롭게 만들어낸 도깨비는 이 시대의 영웅인 ‘슈퍼스타’의 모습을 하고 있다. 호랑이(Tiger)와 용(Dragon)을 합친 ‘타이건(Tigon)’이란 이름을 가진 이 슈퍼스타 도깨비는 악을 물리치고 어려운 세태를 살아가는 현대인들에게 기쁨을 주는 수호신 같은 존재다. 무엇보다 무한 긍정적인 의미를 품고 있다. 그 모양에 있어서는, 밝고 강렬한 원색과 경쾌한 선, 화려한 모습에서 따뜻하고 긍정적인 에너지를 느낄 수 있다. 이는 권 교수의 가치관과 성격이 그대로 담긴 것이기도 하다. 도깨비 캐릭터의 모습을 하나하나 설명하는 그에게서는 미래에 대한 긍정적 기대와 밝고 낙천적인 성격, 꾸미지 않은 솔직한 모습과 따뜻한 시선, 꿈과 열정 등을 고스란히 느낄 수 있었다.
Dokaebee is bisexual. It has two completely different characters as it can be masculine but feminine, courageous but timid. It is scary but friendly and has a mysterious power but shows stupidity. Above all these, it is very Korean but can be universal.
The Dokaebee created by professor Kwon has a figure of ‘superstar’ of this time. The name ‘Tigon’ comes from ‘Tiger’ and ‘Dragon’ and it is like a guardian that defeats evil and gives joy to modern people living a hard life. Most of all, it contains infinite positiveness. Its vivid colors, strong lines and brilliant shape bring a warm and positive energy and this shows characteristics and values of professor Kwon. By looking at professor Kwon explaining Dokaebee character one by one, I can feel positive aspiration, outgoing personality, honesty, hearty sight, dream and passion of her.
세계를 휩쓸고 있는 ‘한류’는 음악과 영화·드라마를 넘어 이제 미술한류에까지 이르렀다. 그는 우리나라 전통 도깨비를 세계화함으로써 또 다른 한류 열풍을 일으키고 싶다.
“도깨비 작품으로 한국의 미술과 아름다움을 전 세계에 알리고 싶어요. 개인적으로 유명해지려는 것도, 돈을 벌려고 하는 일도 아니에요. 한국적 캐릭터를 세계에 알리고 인정받고 싶은 꿈이 있어요. 그 꿈 때문에 어려운 작업도 참고 즐겁게 임하는 거죠.”
시간적으로도 체력적으로도 많이 힘든 작업이지만 이루고 싶은 꿈이 있기에 즐겁기만 하다. 교수로, 화가로, 때론 학생으로, 그리고 아내이자 어머니로, 몸이 열 개라도 모자를 정도로 바쁘게 살지만 그의 열정은 누구도 말릴 수 없다. ‘꿈’이 있기 때문이다.
권 교수가 그린 도깨비는 콜라주 형식으로 현대적 감성을 조합해 팝아트적인 분위기를 낸다. 여기에 현실적 문제를 상징하는 도상들이 도깨비 신체의 일부를 형성한다. 이를테면 성적인 문제나 환경적 문제 혹은 정치적 상징까지 포함하고 있어 그의 도깨비는 현재 진행형인 셈이다. 여기에 렌티큘러 기법으로 보는 각도에 따라 두 개의 다른 그림이 나타난다.
이런 도깨비를 통해 권 교수가 전하고 싶은 말은 무엇일까? 전준엽 화가는 “권태순이 전하고자 하는 것은 만사형통의 긍정적 메시지”라고 평한다. 그의 말을 빌자면 “복잡하고 시끄러운 세상의 모든 문제를 방망이 한 방으로 해결해주는 도깨비의 신통력을 기원하고 있는 것”이다. 그의 바람대로 밝고 긍정적인 에너지로 가득 찬 미래가 우리에게 다가오길, 또한 세계에 한국의 도깨비가 널리 알려질 수 있기를 바라본다.
‘Korean wave’ which is taking over the world, is now beyond music, movie and drama and is influencing art industry. She would like to bring another Korean wave by universalizing Korean traditional Dokaebee.
“I would like to promote the beauty and art of Korea in the world through Dokaebee. It is not about becoming famous or making a fortune out of it but it is about to promote Korean character in the world and get acknowledged. I can enjoy hard working because of that dream.”
It is physically challenging as well as time consuming but she is enjoying it for her dream. She is living such a busy life as a professor, artist, student, wife and a mother. However, her passion can never be stopped because of her dream.
The dokaebee drawn by professor Kwon gives pop art feeling by combining modern emotion as a form of collage. And icons representing realistic problems are forming a part of Dokaebee’s body. Dokaebee represents sexual problem, environmental problem as well as political situation so Dokaebee is considered to be ongoing. It presents two different pictures by the angle using lenticular method.
So what does she exactly want to show through this Dokaebee? Artist Joonyeob, Jeon said “Her message is the positiveness for all.” He also added, “She seeks supernatural power of Dokaebee that resolves all the problems in the world at once.” As her wishes, I hope we will have a future full of bright and positive energy and Dokaebee can be widely acknowledged in the world.
